Hans Petter Moland’s film “Out and Stealing Horses” did not reach a nomination for this year’s Academy Award for best non-English language film.

91 films were registered in the category, and ten films were selected for a so-called shortlist.

The list will be even shorter in January. Two Oscar committees, one on the west coast of the United States and one on the east coast, will then review these films and select five to be nominated.

On January 13, 2020, will be announced which five films this applies to. A little over a month later, February 9, the 92nd Academy Awards takes place.

“Out and Stealing Horses” is based on Per Petterson’s novel of the same name, which came out in 2003. The book became an international bestseller. In the film version, Stellan Skarsgård, Tobias Santelmann, Pål Sverre Hagen, Bjørn Floberg and Danica Curcic play the lead roles.

Five Norwegian feature films have been nominated for Academy Awards throughout history. They are “Kon-Tiki” (2013), “Elling” (2001), “Sunday Angels” (1996), “The Wizard” (1987) and “Nine Life” (1957). None of them have won.
