“Verdens verste menneske” shortlisted for Oscars nomination

The Norwegian film, fresh off winning critical praise in Cannes and New York, is now one of 14 films that made the shortlist for the 'Best Foreign Film' award for the upcoming Oscars.

A Norwegian film nominated for a second year in a row

Verdens verste menneske” (The Worst Person in the World) has made it onto the prestigious Oscar shortlist Variety announced this week. This is the second year in a row that a Norwegian film has made it onto the shortlist for this award. Last year it was Maria Sørdahl’s contribution “Hope” but Joachim Trier’s film feels like it is gaining momentum at the right time.

The star of the movie, Renate Reinsve, recently won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival while the film itself won the New York Film Critics Circle Award for “Best Foreign Film.” Speaking to the newspaper Drammens Tidende, Reinsve said “..it feels very big, it feels like the world is becoming much smaller suddenly. This is the world’s biggest competition..” She also spoke of the honor of the film making the shortlist.

International praise helping to put Norwegian film on the map, Obama a fan

Kjersti Mo, director of the Norwegian Film Institute, felt that all the critical praise for the movie was positive for the Norwegian film industry.

Mo noted the power of all the “…victories at festivals around the world. All the attention that the film receives also contributes to putting Norwegian film on the international film map.”

The film was also helped by former US President Barack Obama announcing on Twitter that it was one of his favorite films of 2021.
