The new method of mapping insects is much faster than the old one. Before, researchers had to go through insects manually and determine the species of each individual insect. It took an extremely long time, and would have been impossible to do with such large quantities of insects caught in the traps, insect researcher Jens Åström at the Norwegian Institute for Natural Research stated.

The findings are compared with international DNA databases and used to build up a Norwegian base. Around 400 species that have not been detected in Norway before have been identified so far. Out of the total, 167 of them have also not been registered in neighboring countries.
