A total of 52 Eastern European professional drivers who felt they were underpaid and filed a claim for compensation against their former employer were upheld in the district court.

The drivers were employed in Vlantana Norge. The transport company operated in Norway before it declared bankruptcy in April last year after revelations about systematic underpayment and the use of fake timesheets, FriFagbevegelse reports.

In the verdict from Romerike and Glåmdal District Court, the drivers have been upheld in their claim for compensation against the company and the chairman of the board.

The chairman of the board has been sentenced to pay NOK 13.4 million to 52 drivers. In addition, he, together with Vlantana Norge, has been ordered to pay NOK 6.7 million in legal costs.

“It was important for the drivers to make claims against the company’s chairman of the board personally because the company was bankrupt and because there are not enough funds in the bankruptcy proceedings. The drivers are very pleased to have won when it comes to their wage demands,” their lawyer Lina Smorr noted in a press release.

She believes that the verdict is important in principle because it will help clean up wage conditions in the transport sector.

Vlantana Norge’s lawyer and former board member, Sandra Latotinaite, was not available for comment.
