An elderly man from Belgium has been sentenced to three years and six months in prison after being stopped with drugs in his suitcase last winter, writes Romerikes Blad.

According to the judgment of the Øvre Romerike District Court, the man’s suitcase was caught by customs and was further handed over to the police, who found two parcels containing a total of 1.396 kilos of cocaine under the liner of the suitcase, the newspaper writes.

The 78-year-old was arrested by police and has been in custody until his case came to court. The Belgian refuses criminal charges for importing drugs and has explained that he thought it was money he was carrying and not drugs.

The elderly man has been sentenced to 3 years and 6 months imprisonment, with 1 year and 6 months suspended.

“The defendant has always said that he was tricked into carrying drugs to Norway. The verdict will therefore be appealed,” says the 78-year-old’s defender, Knut-Ole Bakke Hansen, to Romerikes Blade.
