A man in his 50s from Halden died on Tuesday night as a result of a coronavirus infection. He is, so far, the youngest registered dead.

The man was transported to Østfold Hospital on Tuesday night and died a short time later. He had been ill for a few days and became acutely worse on Tuesday, Halden municipality reports

“It was not known at the time that he was infected with the coronavirus. During Wednesday, necessary tests were performed at the hospital confirming that the deceased person was infected with the coronavirus COVID-19,” says municipal chief medic Halvard Bø in a press release.

Close contacts notified
People who have been in contact with the man in recent days have been notified, the municipality says. This applies to very few.

“I think it is very sad that one of our inhabitants has lost their life as a result of the coronavirus. Our thoughts now go to those closest, who have our deepest compassion in this heavy moment,” says Mayoress Anne-Kari Holm of Halden Municipality.

The municipality states that a total of 18 people have been diagnosed with coronavirus infection.

44th corona death in Norway
The man in his 50s is the 44th coronavirus infected person in Norway who is reported to have died.

In the Norwegian Institute of Public Health’s (FHI) daily report on Wednesday they wrote that the average age of people who have died of the coronavirus in this country is 84 years. At 8 o’clock on Wednesday morning, 34 corona-related deaths had been reported.

The youngest person reported to have died, by FHI on Wednesday morning, was 62 years.
