To date, 63% of the population over the age of 65 have taken the flu vaccine, a record number, according to the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (FHI).

“The goal is a flu vaccination coverage of at least 75% among the risk groups, in line with the recommendations from the World Health Organization and the EU,” Kjersti Rydland, leader for the flu vaccination program at the FHI, noted

She noted that the common flu vaccine does not provide herd immunity in the same way as the childhood vaccines. Therefore, every single dose counts to avoid serious illness and death due to the flu.

Before the corona pandemic, there were an average of 5,000 flu-related hospitalizations and around 900 deaths each flu season – mostly among people over the age of 65, the FHI stated.
