In 2019, 94 children from abroad were adopted. That is seven more children than the previous year, but a decline of 701 children from the 1998 peak year.

The number of stepchild adoptions has also decreased. In 2018, there were 206 such adoptions, while last year 181 grandchildren were adopted, figures from Statistics Norway show.

Last year, most of the children who were adopted from abroad came from Colombia and South Korea. This is a decrease of 2 and 5 respectively from the previous year. The total decline in foreign adoptions over the last ten years is 252 children.

In addition, there were 45 adoptions of foster children, 20 fewer than in 2018. There were twelve other adoptions last year, an increase of five from the previous year.

In 2019, a total of 332 adoptions were carried out, the lowest number since 2006.
