A total of 40 people lost their lives in drowning accidents this summer. Almost half of the accidents occurred in August, according to the Norwegian Society for Sea Rescue’s (Redningsselskapet) drowning statistics.

Thirty-seven of those who died this summer were men, while three were women.

“The summer started quietly with few accidents in June, but in both July and August, we have unfortunately registered many drowning-related deaths,” Tanja Krangnes at the Society for Sea Rescue noted.

“17 drowning-related deaths in August is the highest number we have recorded since we took over responsibility for the national drowning statistics six years ago,” Krangnes added.

Most of the accidents this summer occurred in relation to recreational boats.

“Adult men are greatly overrepresented in the drowning statistics,” Krangnes pointed out.

A total of 67 people have drowned so far this year, 59 men and eight women.
