At least 87 Norwegian civilians have been killed abroad since the year 2000, according to an analysis conducted by the newspaper Stavanger Aftenblad.

Every year after the turn of the millennium, Norwegians have been killed outside Norway’s border, according to the newspaper’s analysis.

The Norwegian authorities do not keep an overview of civilians who are killed outside the country’s borders. They also do not have established routines for following up the investigation in the country where the murder took place, the newspaper writes.

In addition to the confirmed killings, there are dozens of suspicious deaths and mysterious disappearances among Norwegian citizens abroad that may be due to serious crime.

“It is not the case that murders of Norwegian citizens committed abroad are not registered in Norway, but we do not necessarily get information about everyone, and it is not possible to retrieve statistics in our systems on these cases,” senior adviser Jonas Fabritius Christoffersen at Kripos stated.
