Last week, half of the corona patients admitted to Norwegian hospitals were hospitalized for reasons other than COVID-19.

Figures from September 12 last year up to January 9 this year show that 2,356 people have been hospitalized due to coronavirus, the newspaper Aftenposten writes.

At the same time, 943 people have been hospitalized for other reasons, but at the same time, have been infected with the coronavirus.

That means that 28% of the patients have had a different reason for being admitted than corona. Last week, the share rose to 40%. These patients would also have been hospitalized if there had been no corona pandemic.

Not precise enough?

Chief physician Trond Bruun at Haukeland University Hospital believes that this shows that the admission figures are not precise.

“It would have been advantageous to have more precise figures. But they depend on reporting from hospitals. It is demanding to provide such figures daily,” he said.

Assistant health director Espen Nakstad believes, however, that the figures from Helse-Norge give a correct overview of the burden on the hospitals.
