There may be challenges with Norwegian passport capacity in 2023 as well, a letter the Norwegian Police Directorate has sent to the Ministry of Justice and Emergency Preparedness states.

“Thales has announced that we must be prepared for challenges with delivery capacity in 2023 as well,” the letter, which Aftenposten has seen, states.

Thales is the supplier chosen by the Norwegian authorities to produce Norwegian passports.

After months of production challenges and a backlog of passports, national ID cards were hit by a manufacturing error in August when the manufacturer discovered a fault between the antenna and the chip in the ID card that made the card difficult to read.

Challenges in the police’s appointment booking system have also been a problem. The letter states that there is a need to have more operative counters on standby in the future, especially in the central-eastern region and in the larger cities, Aftenposten reports.
