A US general in the Marine Corps would like to put up a number of mobile bases in Norway. Minister of Defense Frank Bakke-Jensen (H) welcomes discussion about the bases.

General David Berger is the commander of the US Marines, a US arms branch with close ties to Norway.

In an article published by the US Naval Institute, he writes about a new concept that would include a network of mobile bases in Norway, according to newspaper Klassekampen.

The bases would support the US Navy’s operations against Russian submarines in the far north of the Atlantic.

They would also be used to threaten Chinese submarines in the South China Sea and Russian submarines in the Arctic.

Bakke-Jensen’s input

In an email to the newspaper, Norwegian Minister of Defense Frank Bakke-Jensen (H) wrote that the US Marine Corps is considering “the need to establish mobile, advanced temporary bases” in Norway.

At the same time, he emphasized that it has not been decided whether this concept will be used in Norway.

According to the current Norwegian base policy, foreign powers can’t have permanent bases for armed forces on Norwegian soil in peacetime.

The proposed bases would not be permanent installations, but the necessary equipment would be stored in Norway in advance.
