On Friday, Prime Minister Erna Solberg (H) confirmed that the government would soon present a bill against gang crime.

“We will give the courts the opportunity to ban groups that engage in serious crime. The goal is to criminalize participation and recruitment to criminal groups,” Solberg told newspaper VG.

The Prime Minister says the process will be twofold.

“First, the criminal association must be banned through a legal process, and then there will be room to punish participation. With a ban, they will no longer be able to make themselves visible,” she said.

Soon-to-be former Progress Party (FRP) leader Siv Jensen sees the proposal as a victory.

“I am glad that the government is coming up with a proposition on this. For many years, we have had a very strong commitment to crack down on gang crime,” Jensen said.

The bill could also affect international criminal networks, the Prime Minister emphasized.
