So far this winter, eleven people have lost their lives in avalanches. Over half of April still remains, which in recent years has been the month with the most lethal avalanches.

‘’Over the past five years, there have been 21 avalanche accidents with fatal outcomes’’ wrote VG newspaper. Eight of them have occurred in April and six in March.

‘’April has, for the past five years, been the month where most people die. People must be cautious and must not think that it is safe, especially not in Northern Norway’’ said group leader, Emma Julseth Barfod of the avalanche warning department at the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE).

She said there have been many accidents this year and that the NVE is very concerned. So far, 11 people have lost their lives in avalanches. It is the highest number since 2010-2011, when 13 people died. And still we are only one and a half weeks into April, and Easter is nearly here.

“When we enter the season when the number of people in the mountains explodes, we are concerned that people must make reasonable choices and be careful” said Barfod.
