Several thousand French health workers have been laid off without pay because they have not made sure to be vaccinated within the deadline set by the authorities.

“Around 3,000 layoff notices were sent out to unvaccinated employees at health centers and clinics yesterday,” Minister of Health Olivier Véran said in a radio interview on Thursday morning.

He says a few dozen health workers have submitted resignations rather than accepting the vaccine. To put this in perspective, Veran reminds people that there are 2.7 million health workers in the country, and he assures that the health services are taken care of.

In July, President Emmanuel Macron informed staff at hospitals, nursing homes, and the fire department that they would be laid off if they had not received at least one vaccine dose by September 15. Many nurses have been skeptical and questioned the safety and effectiveness of vaccines.

Last week, the health service estimated that around 12% of hospital employees and 6% of general practitioners had not been vaccinated yet.

France offers vaccines to children up to the age of 12, and 70% of the country’s population is now fully vaccinated.
