Nearly 600 pigs perished on Wednesday after a fire started in a pig barn at Voll in Klepp Municipality on Jæren.

“The few animals that did not die in the fire have now been euthanized,” fire chief Nils-Erik Haagenrud in the Rogaland Fire and Rescue Service told the newspaper Stavanger Aftenblad at 6:45 AM on Wednesday.

The emergency services were notified of the fire at 11.36 PM on Tuesday, and crews from three fire stations moved out.

“Shortly after we arrived, the building caught fire, and the roof collapsed,” Haagenrud told NTB just before 1 AM on Wednesday.

After about an hour, the fire service announced that they had the fire under control. Ten minutes before that, the roof of the building had collapsed, and there was no longer any danger of the fire spreading to other buildings on the farm.

The fire started in a room adjacent to the room where the pigs are.

“The investigation will show what happened,” Haagenrud said.
