Around 70 reindeer were hit by an avalanche in Nommedalen in Kåfjord in Troms og Finnmark.

The reindeer owners were first notified that 20 to 30 reindeer had been hit. A Norwegian Environmental Protection Agency inspection on Friday showed that the tragedy was probably much worse – up to 70 animals were swept away by the avalanche.

The exact number is not known yet, as the avalanche risk level in the area is too high for people to get close.

Nils Ole Johansen Triumph in the reindeer grazing district told Framtid i Nord that the loss of so many reindeer will have consequences for several years to come.

“Terrible”

“A huge loss for the district. This is terrible,” he said.

John Ivar Larsen from the Norwegian Environmental Protection Agency confirms that they have been on-site and that over 70 animals have been hit.

“Of what we managed to see on the surface, it was around 70, but that is a minimum number,” he told the newspaper.
