Artificial insemination increasing dramatically

Last year, assisted fertilization was carried out on 5,825 Norwegian couples. The proportion that received help to have children has almost doubled in ten years.

By comparison, in 2007, there were 3,130 cases of assisted fertilization in Norway, reported P4.

The figures are taken from the Norwegian Patient Register, showing the number of times fertilized eggs are placed in a woman’s womb at Norwegian somatic hospitals and privatespecialist hospitals.

Just under half of the treatments were succesful.  Last year, 2,517 children came to the world after such treatment.

Last year, 3,745 patients received IVF treatment. 2,645 of these were between 31 and 40 years, 924 patients were 30 years or younger , whilst 153 were over 40 years.

Head of Department at the Women’s Clinic at Oslo University Hospital, Peter Zoltan Fedocsak , believes many couples are waiting too long time to have children.

“There are many who are delaying starting a family, perhaps because of careers, education or because they have not found the right partner,” he says, and stresses that the fertility in men is also getting worse with age.
