Askøy Municipality has been fined NOK 1 million in relation to the waterborne bacteria outbreak in June 2019.

The Western Police District stated that the fine is related to violations of the drinking water regulations, including lack of implementation of sampling and lack of internal control.

There is no basis for prosecuting individuals or the Norwegian Food Safety Authority, according to the police.

Several thousand people became ill when an infection related to the bacterium campylobacter spread via the drinking water on Askøy in June 2019. Two people were hospitalized and died.
