This year, the Bergenserne celebrates that 950 years ago Olav Kyrre founded Bjørgvin. On Saturday, the festival will begin which will last throughout the year.

The official opening of the anniversary celebration will take place at Bryggen in Bergen on Saturday evening. The event at Bryggen will include speeches, light shows and a number of other cultural elements.

Later, a reception will be held at Håkonshallen where those attending were randomly drawn out among the town’s residents. There will be welcome speech by the Mayor Marte Mjøs Persen and a choir singing.

Initially, King Harald was to be at the anniversary opening. The King is currently on sick leave and is therefore replaced by Crown Prince Haakon. The Crown Prince will be present throughout the opening.

The anniversary opening marks the start of the celebrations that will last the year. Throughout 2020, the City of Bergen and other players will offer the citizens a wide range of activities.

– “One party day is not enough. We want everyone who wants to contribute to the celebration to have the opportunity. Therefore, the celebration will take place locally in both the city center and in the boroughs over a longer time,” says Katrine Nødtvedt, city council for culture, diversity and gender equality in Bergen, to NTB.

A total of NOK 2.6 million has been allocated for the anniversary opening and NOK 8.3 million for the entire anniversary year.
