A residential building in the center of Madrid has been severely damaged in an explosion, Spanish media reports.

According to the available information at 4:00 PM, two people are dead and several are injured.

The incident happened at around 3:00 PM on Wednesday. The cause of the explosion is currently unknown, the newspaper El Pais writes.

The building is a residential building southwest of the center of Madrid.

The building is located next to a nursing home. The first reports of the incident incorrectly stated that the explosion occurred in a nursing home, El País reports.

Huge damage

Videos and photos shared on social media show that the damage from the explosion is huge.

“We did not know where the sound came from,” Leire Reparaz, a local resident, told the AP news agency.

“We went up the stairs to the top of our building. From there, we saw the remains of the building and large amounts of gray smoke,” she added.

“No residents or employees are injured,” a spokesperson for the nursing home stated.

“They are evacuating all residents to the hotel on the other side of the street,” the spokesperson added.
