A separate vaccine against the omicron variant of the coronavirus may be ready by the autumn, Moderna says. BioNTech and Pfizer are also in the process of developing an omicron vaccine.

Moderna is preparing a booster dose aimed specifically at the omicron variant. According to the company, the vaccine is now undergoing clinical trials. Moderna director Stephane Bancel told CNBC that the vaccine could probably be administered as early as this autumn.

The vaccine maker has already signed purchase agreements with the UK, South Korea, and Switzerland worth USD 18.5 billion.

BioNTech’s vaccine aimed at the omicron variant may be ready as early as March, the company’s CEO Ugur Sahin told the newspaper Svenska Dagbladet on Sunday.
