The second dose of the vaccine should not be administered later than three weeks after the first, BioNTech warned on Thursday.

The tests, which show that the BioNTech and Pfizer’s vaccine is 95% effective, are based on the fact that the second dose was administered 21 days after the first, BioNTech emphasized in a statement on Tuesday.

“The safety and efficacy of the vaccine have not been evaluated with different dosing times,” the manufacturer said.

“There is no data to support that the protection from the first dose lasts after 21 days,” they added.

The statement comes after Denmark and the United Kingdom have announced that they would postpone administering the second dose to six and twelve weeks after the first, respectively.

The reason behind the decision is the limited supply of vaccines.
