A man in his 60s has been sentenced to eight years in prison for repeatedly assaulting his granddaughter. The abuse occurred from when the granddaughter was 7 to when she was 15.

The woman, who is now in her 20s, told the Buskerud district court last week that her grandfather had assaulted her as often as once a week in some periods.

The court was divided on the question of guilt, and one of the co-judges believed there was insufficient evidence for the abuse. The majority, which sentenced the man, stated that they believed the woman’s explanation was credible.

In addition to the prison sentence, the grandfather has been sentenced to a five-year visiting and contact ban. He is also sentenced to pay just over NOK 6.2 million in restitution and compensation for both already incurred and future loss of income.

The woman has subsequently been diagnosed with, among other things, a complex PTSD diagnosis (post-traumatic stress disorder).

She has recently been granted the status of “young disabled person” and has a medical disability of 42%.
