Center Party: The UK’s Brexit agreement is better than Norway’s EEA agreement with the EU

The Center Party (SP) believes that the UK’s Brexit agreement is better than Norway’s EEA agreement with the EU. They received support from the Socialist Left Party (SV).

Marit Arnstad, parliamentary leader of the Center Party, believes that the UK has an agreement that gives them more freedom and more independence.

“They get access to the internal market and the common trade, but they do not have to be part of a dynamic regulatory development that places strong binds on the individual countries’ national policies,” she told newspaper Klassekampen.

While Arnstad hasn’t read the entire agreement, she believes that the British have a better agreement than Norway’s EEA agreement.

She believes that it highlights Norway’s need to re-evaluate the EEA agreement because the Brexit agreement shows that it is possible to organize trade in a different way than the EEA agreement does.

An alternative?

The SP and SV have previously advocated a public study on an alternative to the EEA agreement, and Arnstad received support from SV’s Heming Olaussen, who heads SV’s EEA committee.

He pointed out, among other things, that the British do not have to deal with the European Court of Justice and thus do not have to accept any EU legislation as Norway now has to do.

“This agreement is qualitatively different and safeguards national sovereignty in a better way than the EEA does for us,” Olaussen said.
