Magnus Carlsen retained the world title in a chess thriller few Norwegians seen before yesterday. It is also reflected in the ratings.

The entire 764,000 viewers followed the section of the whole broadcast on NRK1 TV. It gave a share of 56 percent, wrote the newspaper Kampanje.

– Nearly half of the Norwegian population stopped broadcast. I do not believe this has happened in large many other countries, says Håkon Lund Sørensen in NRK Analysis.

The ratings for chess broadcast is a new record for NRK. The second most watched chess broadcast is from World Cup party 11 in 2014, which had an average of 572,000 viewers.

On average, around 200,000 viewers followed all matches in this year’s world championships, even when matches have stretched into the night.
