The verdict in the appeal case for exploration drilling in the Barents Sea falls on Thursday. In the district court, the environmental organizations lost.

When the appeal started in Borgarting Court of Appeal in November, environmental organizations maintained that the state violates the Constitution by opening for exploration drilling.

It was in 2016 that Nature and Youth (Natur og Ungdom) and Greenpeace sued the state for breach of the environmental clause. The Grandparents’ Climate Action (Besteforeldrenes Klimaaksjon) joined the lawsuit, which ended with a loss in the Oslo District Court in January last year. The three environmental organizations were also required to cover the state’s legal costs of NOK 580,000.

During the proceedings in the Court of Appeal, the Nature Conservation Association (Naturvernforbundet) also joined the plaintiffs.
