On Friday, the municipal chief physician in Sandnes states that 84 russ participants in Jæren and Nord-Jæren have tested positive for the coronavirus after the russ celebration last weekend.

Russefeiring is the traditional celebration for Norwegian high school pupils in their final spring semester.

A total of 90 people are infected – 84 of these are russ participants, while the last six are close contacts of the russ participants – parents, a driver, and siblings.

“I think we have reached the peak. The people who have tested positive have been isolated, and nearly a thousand people in the district are in quarantine.

“There will probably be some new positive test results from close contacts later next week also in connection with the russ outbreak,” the municipal chief physician told newspaper Stavanger Aftenblad.

The infection is mainly due to visits to russ buses that have driven to various gathering points across municipal boundaries to party, the municipal chief physician said.

Torvik estimates that between 1,000 and 2,000 russ participants were part of the russ celebration, which took place across municipal boundaries.
