A Danish woman has been sentenced to two years in prison for inciting violence during a demonstration in Copenhagen in January.
The woman, who is a mother of two, broke down in tears when the verdict was read out in Copenhagen City Court. The penalty is doubled compared to what it would have been in a similar case under normal circumstances (i.e., under no-corona circumstances).
The woman denied criminal guilt, claiming she was at the demonstration to demand higher sentences for pedophile abusers. Video recordings of her speech show that she mostly talked about the pandemic and asked the public to “smash the city.”
“Where is the virus? You behave as if we are all infected? You are behaving as if it were a deadly pandemic,” the woman said before pictures were shown of violence against the police, stone-throwing, and aggressive use of fireworks – while the woman was shouting slogans with a megaphone.
“The accused is angry with the government because of the lockdown, which is her right. But when she incites a group of protesters to violence as a result of the lockdown, the (necessary) provisions will be used,” prosecutor Henrik Uhl Pedersen said.
The verdict is described as unique in Danish legal history, Danish TV 2 writes. The woman has not yet decided whether she will appeal the verdict.
