Defense policy is becoming increasingly important for Swedes, a new survey shows. The reason? Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, according to Swedish Radio Ekot.

“The fact that Russia is invading a country in Europe makes the case hyper-relevant. Then, of course, it intensifies with the discussion about NATO,” Torbjörn Sjöström of Novus, who has conducted the survey, told the radio channel.

The Moderates, who were long considered to have the best defense policy, are now facing competition. An equal proportion of Swedes polled believe that the Sweden Democrats and Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson have the best defense policy.

The parliamentary elections will be held on September 11. Among the ten most important issues before the election, defense ends up in fifth place. The health service is at the top of the list of important issues, which is not at all strange, according to Sjöström.

“It is always at the top; that is the image we have of a Swedish welfare state.”

Just over 1,000 of the 1,700 randomly selected respondents took part in the survey between April 7 and 11.
