DNT is concerned about children’s outdoor activities

The increase of time spent in front of screens and playing indoor games, as well as more families with poorer personal finances, worry the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT).

“Children are less active, spend more time indoors and more time in front of screens. I am worried about what that will mean for public health, children’s well-being, and not least knowledge of nature,” DNT’s Dag Terje Klarp Solvang stated in a press release.

Solvang pointed to a report from NINA (Norwegian Institute for Natural Research), which shows major changes in how children play. Children today play less on their own and play less in nature. Most play time and free time is controlled by adults and is organized or on a screen.

The DNT leader believes that poorer personal finances as a result of the price increase are also concerning.

“Perhaps there will be less money for leisure activities, experiences, and travel. It will affect the children. We know how important it is for children’s coping and motor development to be active outside, so there is cause for concern,” he said.

Solvang believes that hiking and outdoor organizations, volunteers, parents, and schools must work together to inspire children to be outside more.
