Hand sanitizer in the car in the middle of summer can be a fire hazard, the Swedish public safety authorities warn.

The car can become a “sauna” in the summer heat, and it can get so hot that the alcohol evaporates. That can create gases that can be ignited by, for example, sparks generated by static electricity.

“The hotter and the faster it evaporates, the more gas there is that can be ignited,” Peter Albertsson in the Swedish Directorate for Community Safety and Emergency Preparedness stated.

He warned that hand sanitizer should not be stored in high temperatures and direct sunlight.
