Since 2008, Equinor’s Melkøya plant in Hammerfest has emitted 800,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, a total of over 10 million tonnes. By 2027, the plant will be electrified.

“To put this in a different perspective – the emission reduction amounts to the emission of 400,000 fossil fuel cars,” project director Kjetil Myklebust in Equinor told Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK).

The Melkøya plant is part of Hammerfest LNG, a plant for receiving and processing natural gas and one of Norway’s largest points of emissions of CO2.

The plan is for the plant to be electrified by the middle of 2027. The project price tag is NOK 4 billion.

The plant will also be expanded to be able to supply gas until 2050.
