Prime Minister Erna Solberg (H) says to VG that the continued existence of the Nordic passport union is dependent on Sweden and Denmark mantaining their border controls. At the same time she announces an extension of the border controls in Norway.
To the newspaper VG she states that Norway will continue the border controls until EU and Schengen countries get their boundaries under control. We will continue the border controls, although there is only a very limited part of the border that needs to be controlled since Sweden and Denmark also have their own border controls, Solberg says. She hopes that the Nordic passport-free union will remain, but says this is dependent on Sweden and Denmark maintaining their border controls of travelers coming from countries outside the region.
We are in a dramatic situation that nobody could imagine might happen, where the control at the boundaries is not working. The situation is changing the rules, not the other way around, says Erna Solberg.
The government today decided to extend the border control of persons on all ferry arrivals from Denmark, Sweden and Germany until 15 March.
