The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has asked all vaccine manufacturers to investigate whether their vaccines protect against new variants of the coronavirus.

The EMA is developing guidelines for manufacturers who are planning changes to existing COVID-19 vaccines to cope with new virus variants.

Recently, several variants of the virus have emerged, which has led to concerns about increased infectivity.

There have also been indications that the mutated virus may escape immune responses, whether based on previous infections or vaccines.

The EMA says they have asked manufacturers to assess the effect against, among other things, the variants that have appeared in the UK, South Africa, and Brazil and “submit relevant data.”
