The European Commission believes it is possible to achieve lower prices if the EU countries buy natural gas together.

The European Commission is ready to create a group that will work on joint gas purchases. It envisages a scheme where it will lead a joint negotiating group that can hold talks with gas producers.

Russia has been the largest exporter of natural gas to the EU, while Norway is in second place. Following the invasion of Ukraine, the EU has a strong desire to reduce its dependence on Russian gas.

However, Norway does not have the opportunity to deliver more gas. The EU has therefore increased its purchases of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from producers in other parts of the world.
