The Norwegian Public Roads Administration is giving out NOK 5,000 as a Christmas present to all its employees. That amounts to a total of NOK 23 million. Some staff thought the decision was a joke.

“The Christmas gift is a recognition that our employees have had a demanding job situation for a long time, with major restructuring processes and demands for efficiency.

“That has, in turn, increased work pressure. At the same time, many experienced an insecure job situation.

“On top of it all came the corona pandemic, which demanded a lot from our employees in all parts of the business,” press manager Kjell Solem in the Norwegian Public Roads Administration told Gudbrandsdølen Dagningen.

A joke?

The employees were surprised to hear the news, and many thought it was a joke.

“I have worked in the agency for 30 years, and this is the first time I can remember that we’re getting such a Christmas present.

“So the message was received with tremendous cheering,” Ingrid Sigridnes, one of the union organization representatives in the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, noted.
