The Norwegian Public Roads Administration proposes several measures to get people to use public transport again. Among other things, they propose cuts in electric car benefits.

“We must get people back to using public transport,” Minister of Transport Jon-Ivar Nygård noted in a press release.

After two years of corona restrictions, car traffic is largely back to normal, at 95.6% of the traffic volume compared with the traffic picture in 2019. In public transport, the traffic volume amounts to 67.1%, compared to 2019.

The Minister of Transport and Communications has therefore asked an expert group in the Norwegian Public Roads Administration to propose measures to get more people to travel by public transport.

Several proposals

In the short term, the working group proposes, among other things, to introduce new ticket concepts, which have already been implemented in some places.

The working group also advises the government to look at the possibilities of running campaigns, cheaper public transport tickets, and making the use of cars and electric cars more expensive and less advantageous for people.

“To reduce the benefits of using electric cars in and near urban areas… This is how motorists will get more accurate signals about the costs of using road capacity,” the working group wrote in a letter to the ministry.

In the longer term, the working group believes that one must look at public transport as a whole and make it easier to choose public transport over a car.

“The state has already contributed large grants to keep the wheels of public transport in motion. Now we must ensure that the companies stand on their own two feet,” the Minister of Transport stated.
