Norway has joined a joint statement by female foreign ministers from several countries on the reopening of schools in Afghanistan.

“We urge the Taliban to live up to their obligations to the Afghan people and to abide by the international conventions to which Afghanistan has acceded. (We urge the Taliban) to reverse its recent decision and give equal access to education to everyone across the country,” the statement said.

Norway’s Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt (AP) supported the joint statement along with female foreign ministers in Albania, Andorra, Australia, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Canada, Iceland, Kosovo, Malawi, Mongolia, Sweden, and Germany.

In the statement, they called on the Taliban to allow Afghan girls to return to school. Afghan girls were sent home just a few hours after they were allowed to return to school on Wednesday. Girls in junior high school and high school have been denied education since the Taliban seized power in August last year.

Foreign ministers say they will closely monitor whether the Taliban deliver on their promises.

“We will measure them by their actions, not by their words,” they wrote.

I am 100 percent positive that the TALIBAN will listen and comply. Oh yes, they will.

  2. Nonetheless, Vernon, it is very good that Anniken and the others have made this statement … gesture.
Now that the Taliban have achieved some international legitimacy, they may listen a little more to international opinions and appeals like this.
And girls *should* go to school, as my 11 year old very math- and English-proficient daughter would *eagerly* attest. 😎

The post was sarcastic. They keep talking out of both sides of their mouth. Of course, all girls should be able to go to school. It’s a repressive society no matter how you look at it and I doubt anything will change.
