The number of crimes, especially sexual assault, has decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time, serious criminal cases are piling up in the courts.

Overall, the number of crimes reported to the police has decreased by 6.2% during the corona crisis. And for some types of crime, there have been significantly fewer reports, writes Nationen.

“We believe this is mainly related to infection control measures resulting from the pandemic,” says Senior Crown Prosecutor Trond Eirik Schea of the Prosecution Service.

The number of reports of sexual abuse of children under 16 has fallen by 28.3%, and the number of reported rapes is 17.3% less than the same period in 2019, the newspaper writes.

-The system for accepting these reports has been limited for some time. We do not necessarily believe that there has been an equal decrease in the actual number of crimes. If this is correct, there is a cause for concern. We are talking about dark numbers,” he adds.

Schea is concerned that the low activity in the courts has led to a long series of serious criminal cases being postponed and awaiting court proceedings.

“There is a backlog of cases to be dealt with in court,” he says.
