FHI director Camilla Stoltenberg encourages unvaccinated people to get vaccinated. “It’s urgent. We expect a big wave of infection right after the New Year,” she warned.
“The risk of becoming infected is greater than ever now. Vaccination protects well against serious illness. Therefore, I ask those who have refused to be vaccinated so far to think again. In all the country’s municipalities, we are ready to administer the first dose,” Stoltenberg said.
“If many people are infected in a short time, the risk of becoming seriously ill will be greater than ever for those who have not been vaccinated. But the vaccines protect the individual well,” she added.
A large number of ill people at the same time can put a great strain on hospitals, municipal health services, and the whole community, the head of the FHI warned. Unvaccinated people now make up half of those admitted to COVID-19 hospitals.
A message to the unvaccinated
“Therefore, we encourage all unvaccinated people to show up at the vaccination centers,” Camilla Stoltenberg said.
The omicron variant is now leading to a new wave of infection and hospitalizations in many European countries. The municipalities and hospitals are preparing for this wave to arrive in Norway in January.
“We now probably have a short time interval before the infection rises rapidly. We must use this (time) to get as many people as possible vaccinated who are waiting for their first, second, or third vaccine dose,” she concluded.
