Myocarditis and inflammation of the pericardium are now listed as very rare side effects in the National Institute of Public Health’s (FHI) vaccination recommendation.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) recently concluded that myocarditis or pericarditis are possible side effects after vaccination, and both conditions are now listed as very rare side effects.

“We still consider the benefit of protecting against the coronavirus as greater than the risk of getting these rare side effects. At the same time, we now see the need to update the advice for those who have had peri- or myocarditis after vaccination,” chief physician Margrethe Greve-Isdahl at the FHI noted.

It is not yet known whether those who have experienced peri- or myocarditis after the first dose are at risk of recurrence after the second dose.

“As a precautionary principle, those who have had peri- or myocarditis after the first dose should refrain from the second dose. At high risk of severe coronavirus, the second dose can be given after an assessment by a pediatrician or specialist in heart disease,” Greve-Isdahl added.
