Finland fears it could become a target for Russian data attack if it joins NATO
Finland will probably become a target for Russian cyber warfare if it applies for membership in NATO, the country's President Sauli Niinistö said.
Niinistö pointed to the risk of “disruptive” behavior from Russia if Finland were to apply for membership, according to the Finnish public broadcaster YLE.
In addition, he fears that NATO membership can lead to increased tensions at Finland’s 1,340-kilometer border with Russia, as well as border violations.
Russian authorities have warned that if Finland and Sweden join NATO, they will see it as a hostile act with “serious military and political consequences.”
A recent poll showed that the majority of Finns now want to join NATO.
