Finland announced a sharp tightening of entry rules for Russians.

“Those who plan to cross the border as tourists will not be allowed in,” Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto said on Friday.

This applies to Russians who have tourist visas issued by Finland and tourist visas issued by any other Schengen country, he stated.

The measure is to be set forward in the coming days.

The government explained that Finland’s international position could be seriously damaged, seen in the light of the fact that the Baltic countries, which are also part of Schengen, now refer to tourism from Russia as a security threat.

On Friday, a Finnish border guard force spokesman stated that the number of Russians who have arrived in the country has doubled after Moscow announced the mobilization of reservists for the war in Ukraine earlier this week.

Over 6,000 Russians arrived in Finland on Thursday alone, according to the spokesman.
