Train traffic between Helsinki and St. Petersburg will be stopped from next Monday, the Finnish railway company VR announced on Friday.

Due to the decision, one of the last transport routes to the EU for Russian citizens will become unavailable.

“Until now, we have maintained traffic according to the authorities’ directives. The purpose has been to ensure that Finnish citizens have access to Finland.

“In recent weeks, those who have wanted to leave Russia have managed to do so,” Topi Simola, head of VR’s passenger traffic, noted.

VR confirmed that the last train to Helsinki would depart from St. Petersburg on Sunday morning.

The border between Finland and Russia will remain open to private motorists.
