Finland should join as a full member of NATO, according to its President Sauli Niinistö and Prime Minister Sanna Marin.

Niinistö and Marin presented their views in a joint press release on Thursday.

“Membership in NATO will strengthen Finland’s security,” the statement said.

It states that Finland must apply for membership in the Defense Alliance without any delay.

Niinistö, together with the Foreign and Security Policy Committee of the Finnish National Assembly, is charged with formally deciding whether Finland will become a NATO member.

The Defense Committee of the National Assembly has already stated that they believe NATO membership is the best alternative for Finland’s security.

Until now, Finland, like Sweden, has been non-aligned. But in both countries, the NATO debate gained momentum when Russia invaded Ukraine.

The Swedish authorities have also announced that they will make a decision on NATO membership shortly.
