On Wednesday, Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeldt (AP) openly condemned Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
“I have a clear Norwegian message to Russia – we condemn their actions in Ukraine. At the same time, we must safeguard Norwegian interests, including our security policy interests, through cross-border cooperation. This applies to areas such as fisheries management, search and rescue, and many other areas,” Huitfeldt noted in a press release.
Huitfeldt is in Kirkenes to attend the opening of the Kirkenes Conference.
“In the tense security policy situation in Europe, I am particularly interested in discussing this with people in Kirkenes,” she said.
Huitfeldt first has a meeting under the auspices of the Barents Secretariat, where she will meet a number of local actors. This year’s conference will revolve around the value of open borders in the geopolitical Barents area.
