Minister of Defense Frank Bakke-Jensen confirms that Norway has been asked to join a multinational force in Mali.

Norway and several other European countries have been asked by French and Malian authorities to contribute to the force called Takuba.

The request comes as a result of far-reaching Islamist groups advancing in Africa, and especially in the Sahel belt where Mali is located.

– The force will be involved in capacity building to strengthen the Malian army’s ability to deal with the growing terror threat in the area. Takuba is linked to the French Barkhane operation in the Sahel region, Defense Minister Frank Bakke-Jensen (H) told Aftenposten.

– How Norway will respond to this request is under consideration, he says.
