The French military has tested a new variant of a medium-range missile that can carry nuclear weapons.

The missile was fired by a fighter jet off the west coast of France on Wednesday, according to Ministry of Defense Florence Parly.

Parly described the test as successful. The plan is for the ASMPA missile to be put into production and put to use by the Air Force, Navy, and other parts of the French military.

As Britain has left the EU, France is now the only EU country with nuclear weapons. The test of the ASMPA missile takes place at a time when relations with Russia are very tense.

The Kremlin has warned that Russia could use nuclear weapons if the country were exposed to “an existential threat.”
